The Music Director (MD) is the person who coordinates the activities of the music
department. The MD is the responsible for the quality and amount of music supplied
by industry contacts. It is expected that the MD will seek out suppliers of genres
or artists that are unrepresented or under-represented in the station. The MD
will also report regularly to charting publications in order to ensure that the
station's profile remains current with the industry.
The MD also maintains an adequate processing system for music product the station
receives. This includes tracking the music and established tracking hours are
required. Tracking by fax, email or phone may be required by distributers, and
it is the MD's responsibility to respond by the most effective means.
The care of the music product is also the responsibility of the MD. Music must
be recorded as received, copies destined for broadcast must be marked for security,
the product must be catalogued,
It is important to provide continuity and a sense of teamwork to the music staff,
and so the MD should hold regular meetings and, from time to time, social events.
The MD is one liaison between the Music Department and the rest of the station.
In relating to programmers, the Executive or paid staff, the MD should keep the
best interests of the department in mind.
The MD is the supervisor of the Music Assistant(s). They assign tasks to these
individuals as needed, and provide leadership and access to training for the assistant's
continued development.
The MD is expected to keep a minimum of ten regular, posted hours a week.
