Music Director

Overview of the Music Director Position:
The Music Director (MD) is the person who coordinates the activities of the music department. The MD is the responsible for the quality and amount of music supplied by industry contacts. It is expected that the MD will seek out suppliers of genres or artists that are unrepresented or under-represented in the station. The MD will also report regularly to charting publications in order to ensure that the station's profile remains current with the industry.
The MD also maintains an adequate processing system for music product the station receives. This includes tracking the music and established tracking hours are required. Tracking by fax, email or phone may be required by distributers, and it is the MD's responsibility to respond by the most effective means.
The care of the music product is also the responsibility of the MD. Music must be recorded as received, copies destined for broadcast must be marked for security, the product must be catalogued,
It is important to provide continuity and a sense of teamwork to the music staff, and so the MD should hold regular meetings and, from time to time, social events.
The MD is one liaison between the Music Department and the rest of the station. In relating to programmers, the Executive or paid staff, the MD should keep the best interests of the department in mind.
The MD is the supervisor of the Music Assistant(s). They assign tasks to these individuals as needed, and provide leadership and access to training for the assistant's continued development.
The MD is expected to keep a minimum of ten regular, posted hours a week.

Department Election/Appointment Procedures for Music Dept. Assistants:
Up to two positions of Music Assistants shall be elected by a majority vote of music department members. The election(s) will take place within a regularly scheduled meeting, or in a special meeting providing all music members are notified two (2) weeks in advance. Nominations for the position may be made by any Music Department member, or a Music department member may stand for the position without nomination.
A statement of qualifications and goals must be presented by all candidates prior to a vote. Questioning of candidates is permitted prior to a recognized call to vote.

Should one or both positions become vacant and elections not possible, an appointment to the position may be made by the Music Director. Appointed positions are to be considered interim and an election must take place at the earliest convenience.

 


 


Music Director Job Description

1.Status Within The Station Structure: As a core volunteer coordinator the Music Director has a vote on the Executive Committee. They are expected to work with the committee on matters related to the Music Department. Presentations may be required by the Executive Committee from time to time.

2.General Accountability: All functions of the Music Department are supervised by the Music Director.

It is the responsibility of the MD to maintain the music library database.
The MD is responsible for developing and maintaining good relations with music industry contacts. The MD acts as a liaison with distributers and labels for product distribution and artist contact.
The MD oversees departmental changes, including policies, meeting times, equipment use or personnel arrangements.
The MD supervises the volunteer Assistant MD(s).

3. Dimensions:
The MD is the coordinator of the Music Department.
The MD is the final authority on what level of rotation a music product is given
The MD is responsible for maintaining a high level of standard for music available for broadcasts.
The MD is responsible for ensuring that all members interested in working in the music department get prompt, adequate training.
The MD is responsible for the security of the Music Dept. and music product.
The MD is the supervisor of the Music Assistant(s).
The MD is responsible for maintaining the music budget.

4. Specific Accountabilities:
-Maintain an up to date, searchable music library database.-
maintain a neat, equipped music office and music library.-
cultivate music industry contacts to ensure a wide range of music genres is supplied to the station.-
report on a weekly basis to charting publications including our own web page.-
maintain an adequate processing system for all music received by the station, including: receiving, tracking, sorting for rotation, cataloguing, filing, storing and caring for music product.-
provide training and opportunities for advancement to all Music Department members,-
ensure that necessary materials such as magazines, faxed information and phone messages are up to date and accessible to all dept. Members.-
provide assistance to music staff in the form of training and advice.-
establish a meeting schedule for the department members.-
provide a report to the Executive Committee as requested.-
participate regularly in Staff meetings as called by the Station Manager.-
participate in budget meetings with the Executive and other paid staff.-
provide a line item department budget to the Station Manager prior to the annual budget meeting(s).
